COCOBOD rebuts Miracle’s claims, denying any familial link or tradition involving Randy and the presidency. |
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has strongly refuted claims made by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 campaign team, regarding the conduct of its newly appointed CEO, Dr Randy Abbey.
Mr. Aboagye, in an interview with Channel One TV on May 7, 2025, accused Dr Abbey of spending more time touring cocoa farms with a leather chair and complaining about inherited challenges than delivering on promises made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to farmers.
"The farmers tell him, 'You promised us GH¢6,000 per bag and not GH¢3,000.' Then he says it's not possible because of a mess left at COCOBOD. Why carry a leather chair around if you’re serious about solutions?" Aboagye stated.
Responding to the allegations, COCOBOD's Head of Corporate Communications, Sam Jerome, called the claim "an outright lie" and "beneath someone like Miracles Aboagye."
“You can go to all six regions we’ve visited — and speak to the people there. Ask them if we even carried a plastic chair. It never happened. It’s falsehood and shouldn’t be entertained,” Jerome said in an interview on Channel One TV.
He further clarified that Dr Randy Abbey has not used or carried any special chair during his nationwide tour to engage directly with cocoa farmers. Rather, the CEO’s initiative has been focused on understanding farmer concerns and restoring transparency in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

Jerome defended Dr Abbey’s commitment to the job, saying the CEO is a servant leader, not one seeking comfort or privilege.
“Dr Abbey is not a relative of former President Akufo-Addo to be inheriting any tradition of carrying chairs. This is public service, not political theatre,” he emphasized.
He urged the NPP and its campaign spokespersons to focus their commentary on policy discussions and responses to the revelations made during the CEO's field visits, including cocoa pricing, mismanagement, and farmer welfare.
The dispute underscores rising political tensions around Ghana’s cocoa sector, especially as campaign season intensifies ahead of the 2024 elections. With farmers demanding action and accountability, both parties are under pressure to explain their policies and past actions regarding cocoa pricing and COCOBOD management.
