A major breakthrough in the fight against the illegal opioid trade in Ghana’s Northern Region has been made after the Tamale-based Anti-Tramadol Taskforce apprehended a police officer allegedly involved in the sale of Tramadol.

The officer, identified as Saani Abdulai of the Sakasaka Police Station, was arrested during a special operation by the citizen-led taskforce on Saturday, April 27, 2025. He was found with six boxes of Tramadol—a highly addictive and controlled substance often abused by youth and commercial drivers.

Speaking to the press, Chairman of the Taskforce, Alhaji Naziru Gbarigbari, revealed that their intelligence indicated the suspect had over 1,500 boxes in his possession, though only six boxes were found during the raid.

“Even though he mentioned having Tramadol 225mg when interacting with our undercover agent, we found only 125mg on him,” said Alhaji Gbarigbari. “We suspect he is hiding more elsewhere.”

The Chairman added that Abdulai initially denied involvement, attempting to use his status as a law enforcement officer to intimidate the taskforce.

“He tried to scare us using his police badge, but we were one step ahead,” Gbarigbari stated.

During interrogation, Abdulai admitted to engaging in the sale of Tramadol, though he was quick to stress that the Ghana Police Service was unaware of his actions.

“The police service doesn’t know I’m involved in this. I did it in secret,” Abdulai confessed. “I went into this business because things were tough; I had no turning point.”

The Anti-Tramadol Taskforce has said they plan to hand over the suspect to the Ghana Police Service once they conclude their own investigation.

Chairman Gbarigbari called on the public to continue supporting their efforts to fight the rampant illegal sale of opioids in the Northern Region.

“This fight can only succeed with public backing. We are urging all citizens to report suspicious activities,” he said.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest or whether an internal investigation has been launched.
