President Mahama unveils a major rice mill project in Mamprugu-Moagduri to boost agriculture and provide 2,000 jobs. |
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a groundbreaking agricultural project in the North East Region, signaling a significant shift toward food self-sufficiency and rural employment.
During his Thank You Tour, Mahama revealed that with the support of the World Food Programme, a state-of-the-art rice mill will be constructed in Jagdima in the Mamprugu-Moagduri District.
“This project is expected to process over 30,000 metric tons of locally grown rice annually, and it will create over 2,000 jobs—especially for women, children, and youth,” Mahama stated.
The initiative is set to boost the local rice value chain, reduce post-harvest losses, and curb Ghana’s dependence on imported rice—a recurring challenge in national food security.
Mahama further emphasized that all rice produced will be absorbed by the National Buffer Stock Company:
“When this rice mill is completed, I have asked the National Buffer Stock Company to procure all the rice that will be produced there. We'll pay for it and buy it and supply it to our secondary schools to feed our children,” he declared.
This ensures both a stable market for local farmers and a consistent supply of rice for the Free SHS school feeding programme.
The rice mill project aligns with Mahama’s broader vision to industrialize agriculture and promote inclusive rural development through practical, job-creating interventions.
