The Government of Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, has commenced the payment of GH¢1,300 monthly allowances to all Assembly Members across the country. The initiative is part of the Resetting Ghana Agenda, aimed at revitalizing grassroots governance and improving local-level project supervision.

Announcing the development at a press briefing on Monday, July 14, 2025, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, confirmed that GH¢23.6 million has already been paid to cover April and May allowances, with funding from an initial GH¢25 million released by the Ministry of Finance.

“The NDC government has allocated GH¢100 million in the 2025 budget to ensure a monthly consolidated allowance is paid to all Assembly Members – both elected and appointed,” Minister Ibrahim stated.

He emphasized that the payments are in fulfilment of a 2024 campaign promise made by President Mahama, which aimed to empower the 9,085 Assembly Members nationwide with both financial resources and logistical support to monitor the implementation of government projects in their localities.

Mahama Eyes Election of MMDCEs

In a related development, President Mahama has also hinted at a constitutional reform process that may soon enable the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Speaking to local government heads during a recent engagement, the President remarked:

“You may be the last batch of MMDCEs to be appointed. A national review is underway, and we expect its recommendations in August 2025. One of the big changes being discussed is the popular election of MMDCEs to deepen democratic participation at the local level.”

President Mahama also issued a strong warning to public appointees during an orientation program for MMDCEs, cautioning them against acts of corruption or misuse of public funds.

“The Ghanaian people have entrusted this government with a responsibility to use state resources wisely. I will not tolerate misappropriation,” he said.
