In a chilling daylight robbery that shocked residents of Ho, 25-year-old Paul Avortide, alias "Tinted", has been sentenced to 19 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Ho Circuit Court for robbing a pregnant woman at knifepoint.

The conviction, handed down on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, comes after a meticulous investigation led by the Volta Regional Police Command, which culminated in the arrest of Avortide and the recovery of one of the stolen items.

The robbery took place at 4:00 a.m. on May 21, 2025, at Tsikpota, near New Housing in Ho. The victim, identified as Ogechi Chidiebere, was on her way to the Ho Municipal Hospital for antenatal care when she was ambushed.

Armed with a machete, Avortide reportedly robbed her of GH¢3,000 and a Tecno Spark 30c smartphone worth GH¢2,500.

Following a report to police, investigations led to the arrest of 23-year-old Harmony Nbonu, known as “Arab Money”, on June 19 at the Ho Main Market. He was found with the stolen mobile phone and admitted during questioning that he had purchased it from Avortide for GH¢850.

This confession enabled police to track Avortide to Matse, a suburb of Ho, where he was hiding. He was promptly arrested.

Charged with robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), Avortide pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea. Presiding Judge Osman Abdul Hakeem sentenced him to 19 years in prison with hard labour.

Meanwhile, Nbonu was charged separately for dishonestly receiving stolen property under Section 146 of the same act but was acquitted and discharged due to lack of evidence proving criminal intent.

Avortide has since been transferred to the Ho Regional Prison to begin serving his sentence.

This conviction sends a strong message against violent crime, particularly those targeting vulnerable individuals like pregnant women, and reflects Ghana’s commitment to swift justice.
