Ghana Police dismantle 10 drug ghettos and arrest 4 suspects in a sweeping anti-narcotics operation in Agona Swedru. |
A major anti-drug operation carried out by the Agona Swedru District Police has led to the destruction of 10 marijuana (wee) ghettos and the arrest of four suspects in the Agona West Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region.
The crackdown, which took place under the banner of "Operation: Burn All Ghettos in Agona West," was spearheaded by District Police Commander ASP Vida Yenkey and District Crime Officer ASP Erica Naab.
According to police sources, the goal of the operation is to stop youth from abusing drugs, particularly marijuana, which is reportedly fueling a rise in crime and health issues in the area.
“We are doing this to protect our youth from destroying their future through drug abuse,” ASP Yenkey stated.
Among those arrested were three men and one woman, all of whom are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The ghettos, which served as hubs for the sale and use of marijuana, were burned down during the operation to ensure they are not reoccupied.
🚨 Police Plead for Non-Interference
ASP Vida Yenkey, speaking off camera to Adom TV, called on community stakeholders, traditional authorities, and assembly members to stop interfering with police efforts.
“Interference from opinion leaders and local chiefs has become one of our biggest challenges,” she said. “We need their support, not opposition.”
The Agona Swedru District Police have vowed to sustain the momentum and continue raiding drug dens and other criminal hideouts as part of their mission to cleanse the municipality.
They are also calling on residents to volunteer information about criminal activity in their neighborhoods to help build a safer Agona West.
