A Nigerian clergyman, Bishop (Prof) Papa Frank Lloyd, has become the subject of widespread online ridicule after a failed prophecy regarding the UEFA Champions League semi-final clash between Barcelona and Inter Milan.

The preacher, speaking during a sermon at Light Bearers Church in Port Harcourt, confidently declared—based on what he claimed to be a divine revelation—that Barcelona would defeat Inter Milan to secure a place in the final. His prophecy came before the semi-final matchups had concluded and quickly gained traction online due to his certainty and charisma.

For a moment, it appeared that the man of God might have been on to something. As reported by Livescore, Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, mounted an impressive second-half comeback after trailing at halftime. The Spanish side dominated possession and created numerous chances, with Raphinha scoring in the 87th minute to give Barcelona the aggregate lead.

However, just as Bishop Frank’s words seemed on the verge of manifesting, Inter Milan struck back. Francesco Acerbi levelled the score late on, pushing the tie into extra time. Then, a swift counterattack saw Mehdi Taremi assist Davide Frattesi, who scored the winning goal that shattered Barcelona's hopes—and the prophecy.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza erupted as Inter advanced, and the Bishop’s credibility came under fire.

Social Media Erupts in Sarcasm

Football fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to roast the preacher with sarcastic quips, memes, and criticism, accusing him of misrepresenting divine insight and turning spiritual matters into a circus act.

User @MrLegendOffici1 tweeted:

“As3m oooo. These pastors have turned God into a liar 🤥”

@ticklefari questioned the authenticity of the prophecy:

“Who send am? Which god was that one? Nyankopɔn pɛ ne nokwafo.”

The Bigger Issue

While some shrugged it off as harmless banter, others raised concerns about the credibility of religious figures who make public declarations on secular events like football matches. Critics argue such prophecies risk trivializing faith and misleading congregants.

Bishop Frank Lloyd has yet to respond publicly to the backlash or clarify the origins of his prediction.
